Photography Background:
I really got my boost in
photography after climbing Mount Rainier in 2000. When
comparing my point-and-shoot photos with my climbing
buddy's 35mm SLR shots, I was blown away by the obvious
difference in quality he gained by lugging around that
heavy expensive camera on our climb. I promptly enrolled in
a photography class at the local community college, bought
a full manual Pentax SLR camera, and started taking some
real pictures.
I'm fortunate enough to live and work in beautiful Northern
Michigan where I enjoy a never-ending list of subjects and
opportunities for recreation. With easy access to
Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Ontario Canada, much of my
work has come from these areas.
Equipment:
Pentax *istDS
6.1MP digital SLR camera body
This is my go-to camera body; light, small, and takes very
nice digital photos. The 1.5X magnification of the image
sensor has made landscape photography a bit of a challenge,
but I'm adapting...
Casio Exilim
5.0 MP "point-and-shoot" digital camera
A tiny, super-lightweight little camera with great
resolution and some good controls. This camera seems to
find its way into my pack on every outing.
Pentax pZ-1P
35mm SLR camera body
I cut my teeth on this camera. No other SLR body feels
better in my hand and it's never let me down.
Most of the older photos on this site were taken with my
beloved Z-1.
Pentax SMC FA 50mm f/1.4
Possibly my favorite lens; sharp, fast, and compact.
Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6
The kit lens that came with my DS; lightweight and useful
for those wide-angle shots, it renders some surprisingly
nice photos.
Sigma EX DG 20mm F/1.8
My favorite fast wide angle lens, responsible for me
falling in love with Sigma's EX line of lenses.
Sigma EX DG 24mm-70mm f/2.8
It's heft and size cause me to leave it behind on most
backcountry trips, but it's responsible for some of my
finest shots.
Sigma EX DG 105mm f/2.8 Macro
A fast telephoto with a macro option that has produced some
very pleasing results.
Apple Macintosh 24" iMac Aluminum
My digital darkroom: 2.8 GHz Core Duo processor, 4 GB DDR
SDRAM, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. To manage my digital
photos, I use Aperture 2.1.4, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0,
Adobe Camera Raw Converter, and iWatermark 3.0.5. Depending
on the project, video work is edited using Final Cut
Express HD 4.0.1 or iMovie 09.
